'The RNLI Big Reveal' - The 2016 Waterside Poppy Ladies Display 11th - 19th June.
Hythe & Waterside Poppy Ladies – The RNLI Big Reveal – 11th – 19th June 2016
Prospect Place Hythe
In 2014 the Waterside Poppy Makers came together to knit and crochet 250 poppies to attached to the railings of Prospect Place in Hythe to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the commencement of WWI. Somehow the project snowballed and on the day the display was finally launched 50 local women had spent 2,000 hours producing 4000 hand made poppies to adorn the railings. It touched people’s hearts and by the end of the week over £4000 had been raised for the Royal British Legion. The project not only engaged people from all over the world (the BBC South had over a million hits on their Facebook page) but it left the legacy of the Waterside Poppy Makers , now known as the Hythe & Waterside Poppy Ladies, wanting to continue with this style of fundraising.
For the last year, in utmost secrecy, the Poppy Ladies have been working on a project to raise money for the Hythe and Calshot Branch of the RNLI, a charity dear to the hearts of this coastal community. The theme of the 2016 crochet and knits has been so closely guarded that no local people have a clue as to what they will be other than the colour scheme is red, white and blue. The Big Reveal will be on Saturday 11th June and run until Sunday 19th June. The ‘Not Poppies’ can be purchased during the week and collected when the display is taken down.
Given the success of the 2014 Poppies the visitor numbers are expected to be high and those wanting to view the display can travel to Hythe by car, bus or the Hythe Ferry. They can also enjoy the street market on Tuesday 14th June and the French Market on Saturday 18th June.
