Hythe & Dibden's Oldest Event Returns After Covid With A New Team
Published: 30 July 2022
The Dibden Purlieu, Hythe & District Horticulture Show has been in existence since 1904 and as such is the oldest continuing event in the Parish, it has only been cancelled three times, two World Wars and one Pandemic. In early 2022 the organising committee had dwindled in such numbers that the Parish Council was asked if it could help. The Council agreed to support the event while it recovered. Volunteers were sought and an active committee, guided by one original committee member Gaynor Moore and the Parish Clerk, set to work organising this year's show. There were seventy-one Horticulture and Craft classes to enter; although this year's drought and heatwave had an effect on some classes there was an excellent display of locally grown flowers, fruits, and vegetables. There was also a successful plant sale and refreshment room.
The prizes were presented by Charlotte de Rothschild who delight the visitors by also singing a traditional folk song.
Going forward the show wants to push emphasis to everyone from beginners to experts having a go at growing their own produce.
